January is a well known month for being long and dark and it can be challenging to think of things to do indoors to keep someone living with dementia engaged and stimulated. 

Engaging activities for people with dementia can help stimulate the brain, improve their mood, and maintain a sense of purpose. Try and choose activities that are simple, enjoyable, and suited to their abilities. Here are some ideas:

Memory Games

Look through photo albums and discuss memories. This can spark conversation and recall.  Simple Puzzles with large pieces or memory matching games can be a great way to engage the mind and Name That Tune, playing familiar songs to see if you can identify them and even remember the lyrics.

Creative Activities 

Simple crafts like coloring, drawing, or even finger painting.  Clay or Play-Doh can be both fun and therapeutic.  Putting together a scrapbook with pictures, stickers, and memories.

Physical Activities

Light stretching or chair yoga can help maintain mobility.  Dancing can also encourage gentle movement to the rhythm.  Also a walk outside can help provide physical exercise and a change of scenery.

Cooking or Baking

Simple kitchen tasks in cooking or baking activities like stirring, measuring, or arranging ingredients. 

There are many indoor activities that can help to improve the quality of life for someone living with dementia, it can help to reduce anxiety and stress. It’s important to be patient, flexible, and ready to adapt to their needs and preferences.
