As we celebrate VE Day 2025, we talked to Bobby, a very valued member of Tapestry Day Club. Bobby has been a regular weekly guest for over three years and her life story is one of dedication and remarkable independence. A former nurse who proudly served in the Queen Alexandra Nursing Corps, she also raised four children.
Bobby’s life has been rich and varied. She married in 1954 and, though she sadly lost her husband many years ago, she has continued to embrace her passions. She was a governor of an infant school for over 30 years – most of it as chair and organised house to house collections for the RNLI in Ifold for many years – often roping in her children. She finds joy in music, spoke fluent French, has a keen interest in gardening and even enjoyed playing Petanque (Boule). Her household is completed by her two beloved cats, and she keeps her mind active with puzzles, crosswords, Wordsearch, Qwirkle and Rumikub.
Remarkably, Bobby still lives independently in the same home she has resided in since 1959 – an incredible 66 years within those familiar walls. At Tapestry, our goal is to support her in maintaining this independence for as long as possible.
Reflecting on VE Day in 1945, a significant moment in history, Bobby would have been 18 years old. She believes she was at her mother’s home in Ingrave, Essex at the time. While she doesn’t have a specific memory of the day’s celebrations, her experiences in the years surrounding it are noteworthy.
Bobby embarked on her nursing training at the young age of 19 in 1946, a testament to her early commitment to caring for others. Her service in the Queen Alexandra Nursing Corps further underscores this dedication.
While VE Day itself may not hold a distinct memory for Bobby, her life embodies the resilience and spirit of that era. Her years of service as a nurse, her devotion to her family, and her continued engagement with her interests paint a picture of a strong and capable woman. We are delighted to have Bobby as part of the Tapestry Day Club community and to share in her ongoing journey.
